PRLog (Press Release)Mar 01, 2011
In recognition of National Nutrition Month, I’d like to focus on one of Senior Living Residences’ unique innovations- the Memory Preservation Nutrition® Program.  You may have attended one of our Continuing Education Programs about this diet, or perhaps you’ve enjoyed a meal here at Methuen Village and sampled our brain-healthy menu.  In this letter I will elaborate on this unique program.

SLR is the first assisted living company in the nation to offer the Memory Preservation Nutrition® program, developed by internationally recognized expert Nancy Emerson Lombardo, PhD, adjunct research assistant professor of neurology at the Boston University School of Medicine.  Dr. Emerson Lombardo co-founded the National Alzheimer’s Association in 1980, and has spent much of her career researching the effects of nutrition on the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease.  At Methuen Village, she has trained our chefs on how to incorporate brain-healthy ingredients into all of the meals offered, and how to cook using elements of the Mediterranean diet- such as omega-3 fatty acids, leafy greens, fish, and nuts.  In turn, Victor Casado, our Executive Chef, has created new recipes using her suggestions.

Dr. Emerson Lombardo says that diet changes can benefit individuals of any age, whether or not they have memory loss. Dr. Emerson Lombardo’s claims are backed by extensive research. In a recent study at Columbia University looking at more than 2,000 dementia-free adults ages 65 and older, researchers revealed that persons who consumed a Mediterranean-type diet regularly were 38% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease over the next four years.

Robert Larkin, president of SLR, is proud of the work that we are doing in the area of nutrition to help seniors in our communities eat diets that are full of disease-fighting antioxidants, nutrients with anti-inflammatory properties, and natural substances that help regulate blood sugar – changes that are important for brain health.  “At SLR, we have a truly holistic approach, aiming to improve our residents’ quality of life on all levels.  Nutrition is just one of our focuses, but an important one.  The feedback we’ve received since implementing the Memory Preservation Nutrition® Program has been ALL positive- anecdotally, families have been telling us they are seeing improvements in the health of their loved ones after moving to one of our communities.”

The Senior Living Residences website offers an abundance of information on brain-healthy nutrition, including recipes and advice.  I recommend that you visit our updated page: www.seniorlivingresidences.com/brain-diet.
As always, feel free to stop in to find out more about the Memory Preservation Nutrition® Program and other great offerings here at Methuen Village.  Be well!

Sincerely,

Benjamin Boulter
Executive Director
